The Dangote Refinery IPO: Reasons for Cautious Optimism
I remember the 'tsunami wave' of public offers by Nigerian banks during the banking-sector consolidation drive. For many Nigerians, myself included, it was a first experience of buying shares. I had high expectations, influenced by the substantial dividend cheques my grandmother and father occasionally received from established companies.
Years later, I cannot say those bank investments fully met my expectations. While many banks achieved their capital targets and survived, others were merged, acquired or eventually disappeared.
Still, I am optimistic about the Dangote Refinery IPO. The Dangote Group’s record across cement, sugar and flour, together with the continuing demand for petroleum products, presents a strong case. Dangote group's governance, bold but measured expansion and understanding of African markets over the years, also inspire confidence.
No investment is without risk. However, from a strategic lens, the fundamentals suggest that this IPO could create long-term value, while giving more Nigerians a stake in one of Africa’s most important industrial project so far.
